Last year photographer Stuart Pilkington launched a project entitled What Is England?. The idea was that each of England’s 50 counties would be represented by a single photographer and, over the course of one year, through a series of fixed assignments the project would build a pictorial idea of what England is today.
As the official website says, some of the photographers “live in the county they represent and some are discovering or rediscovering it for the first time“.
The result is a fascinating, poetic, real and vivid portrait of England as seen by the eyes and cameras of 50 different artists. Each county has been portrayed with six pictures only, according to specific topics: “Person”, “Group”, “Work”, “Play”, “Urban” and “Rural”.
