Sweet weapons and soft guerrilla

by Independent Staff

Kyle Bean is a Brighton based designer specialising in hand crafted models, set design and art direction. One of his latest projects – shown in the pages of  CUT Magazine – is called Soft Guerrilla.

Actually Soft Guerrilla was used to illustrate a feature dedicated to guerrilla gardening and yarn bombing and the main concept behind the sculptures is to depict weapons, bombs, dangerous objects or arms created using bizarre materials. So we get green jelly hand grenades, ammunition rounds made with golden candles, brass knuckles crafted from toast and the super cute dynamite made of popsicles.

Quoting Mallory Soto: “Yarn, which evokes soft images of mittens, lumpy sweaters, and kittens worthy of a motivational poster from the 80s, is obviously not usually seen as a tool of rebellion. Gardening, too, is mostly seen as a relaxing activity or chore. Bean’s work evokes the guerrilla aspect of these new trends while holding on the very ordinary and harmless. It’s a really cool, and sometimes really appetizing balance“.
