No compromise for Kane

by Independent Staff

All About Kane is an Italian band born in 2008, devoted to the most intimate and emotional kind of rock/pop you can think of. They released a five track ep called Trails and caught the attention of critics – securing themselves a spot on the stage of Heineken Jamming Festival 2011.
On Tuesday, September 20th, they’ll play a gig during a special event hosted by Sisley in Milan and we had the chance to interview them. Enjoy the enticing sounds of their “citizen pop” (and we bet you never heard this label)…

How did you meet and how was All About Kane born?
Being a musician is almost like living in a small town… everybody knows each other. You start playing guitar and piano with Guido, then you think: “we need Andy’s guitar, then Eddy’s drums and why not Fabry’s bass?”. And that was it! Our project was born from the ashes of different local bands.

Could you explain to our readers the meaning of the band’s name?
Sometimes you’re totally struck by a movie, you know what I mean? This is what happened to me with
Citizen Kane by Orson Welles. But unlike poor Charles Foster Kane we don’t want to hide anything, we don’t want to leave anything misunderstood. Our music reveals everything about us.

If you had to describe your own sound to a friend who never had the chance to listen to your music, what would you say?
It’s difficult for me to describe our sound. I would suggest just relaxing and having a good listen to our music. I definitively think this is the best way to know us and to understand our message.

Do you feel more rock or pop? And which are the artists that had the biggest influence on your sound?
To quote a local journalist, we play “citizen pop”. Each member of the band has his own musical influences and background. Different ideas blend during our rehearsals and this is how our songs are usually conceived… I must admit that we often clash, but in the end, when you feel that special thrill while playing, you know you did a good job.

You chose to sing in English, obviously to expand your horizons and bring your music out of Italy; was it a hard choice? Do you regret anything?
Using English you can reach everybody in the globe. Italy is a little bit backward music-wise, that’s why our project now consists of two parallel paths: same music but lyrics both in Italian and English. We hope this will help us.

Independence, for a band like you, is…?
We don’t want to compromise. Independence, to us, means being able to live thanks to our music as it is and not as somebody else wants it to be.

Do you have anything special planned for your gig in Milan, on September 20th? What kind of set are you going to play?
The opportunity Sisley is giving us really means a lot to us – and it’s really  flattering. We will play an electro/acoustic set with the addition of a cello player. We also hope the models won’t divert us too much… since we’d really like to give a great performance.
