Los Campesinos (which is Spanish for “the peasants”) are a seven piece indie pop band from Cardiff. Born in 2006, until now they released four albums and quickly became critics’ and fans’ favourites.
Their latest effort – Hello Sadness (2011) – is still doing really well and he band is enjoying a loyal following. Pitchfork recently interviewed Gareth (leader and singer of the band), who gave a good insight of what’s going on.
In particular, in case you’re wondering if a band like them – with four acclaimed records under the belt and a song picked for a Budweiser ad -is making millions and living the dream, here is Gareth’s eye opening word: “I work part time cutting grass in a graveyard when we’re off tour. Just ten hours a week at a local church, maintaining the cemetery. It’s actually something that makes me incredibly happy. Just before we came to the U.S. we had two days off so I was working down there to make some pocket money. So I was listening to the new Drake album amongst all these gravestones, just wielding the trimmer like I’m playing air guitar. But you have to be careful not to get caught. With that job, there’s a genuine sense of doing something good: There are all these graves, and if I didn’t cut the grass, nobody would. It’s just so peaceful. People are really genuinely grateful that the work’s being done“.
And, to tell the truth, Los Campesinos have their fair share of haters, especially online; as Gareth explains: “We came from this background of personal message boards. Some people are like, ‘Oh, that could have been my band!’. I think people are a little bit jealous that we’ve done all right with it“.
