Biophilia, the educational program

by Independent Staff

Björk‘s Biophilia album explored new territories becoming the first ever app-album: a record based on the interaction between music and apps for iPad. But the singer-songwriter obviously is not satisfied and is always looking for something more… so she launched an educational program for kids, connected to her album.

The program is based on a series of workshops for schoolchildren: each of them is exploring the intersection of music and science. The first workshops took place last fall in Iceland, and more are planned for New York City during February.

In each city that we visit for this tour, we are going to have classes for kids where they can try out the instruments and the iPad and write songs and take them home. And they’ll be teachers showing them the basics of musicology and showing them how, for instance, the viruses on the ‘Virus’ app move in similar ways as the music“, said Björk during an interview with Pitchfork.

The Icelandic workshops took place over four weeks; 60 students aged 10-12 attended and the Biophilia app suite offered a starting point for the classes. Students engaged in activities ranging from playing with Björk’s custom instruments to extracting DNA from an onion to watching the division of a cell on a flat-screen television.

In the video below you can see what, exactly, goes on in these workshops.
