A Radiohead inspired piece by Steve Reich

by Independent Staff

It might sound odd, but it’s true and it could become a key event of next year: minimalist composer Steve Reich will premiere a new work at London’s Southbank Centre, titled Radiohead Rewrite. As the title suggests, the piece is based on two Radiohead songs: “Everything In its Right Place” from Kid A and “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” from In Rainbows.

Radiohead Rewrite will be performed by 13 musicians from the London Sinfonietta on March 5, 2013.

The genesis of the project came about after the band met Reich in Poland in September. Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead’s guitar player) had performed a Reich piece on stage and the composer got interested in the band -the composition performed in Cracov was “Electric Counterpoint”, and you can listen to it below.

Andrew Burke, chief executive of the London Sinfonietta, explained Reich’s project this way: “I don’t think Steve will be quoting these songs directly – I don’t think that’s his style. How he uses the songs as a starting point for what he does is going to be part of the excitement. But ultimately I’m most excited by the fact that we’ve got a new work by Steve Reich”.
